More about the performers...
|
Formed in early 2006, the band has accumulated a diverse repertoire which includes arrangements of fiery Gypsy melodies from Eastern Europe, together with the tangos of the Argentinean Astor Piazzolla – combining the irresistible energy of traditional dance music with a sense of melancholy, drama and passion. With occasional forays into folk and jazz (and even 70s rock), Zigatango is bound to appeal to anyone with a taste for the exciting and unusual.
In early 2008, Zigatango received a WAMi nomination in the category of World Music. A few months later they recorded their first album, which was featured local album of the week on RTR-FM.
Zigatango has given performances at several local venues, including the Fremantle Arts Centre, Little Creatures Loft, Subi Series Concert and Kulcha. During 2007 and 2008, Zigatango performed at a number of festivals – including Fairbridge Folk Festival – on occasion collaborating with the gifted young juggler Alex Duhig and Gypsy dancer Ivanna Mayorenko. They've also attracted the talents of a variety of other musicians, including the newest band member Greg Coles. Together, they continue to perform around Perth, at festivals and other special events.
Note for the etymologically inclined: the name Zigatango is a
combination of Ziga- meaning 'Gypsy', and tango meaning... er... 'tango'.
By an astonishing coincidence, these are precisely the musical genres that Zigatango specialises in!
